Mommy knows the best for their kids. Right?
Be it their food, toys or Fashion, moms always knows to pick the best for their little ones. So when it comes to a clothing brand, that is handpicked by two mothers for your little ones, you know they would always be the best. We are back in our Lady Entrepreneur Series with two Lady Entrepreneurs this time. Meet Sandra and Twakniqua, the Mompreneurs behind – Nos – Nos Kids.
Hey there, Would you mind sharing a little about your Business to our Readers.
Of course! We are Twakniqua and Sandra, the co-founders of Nos Nos Online Boutique, an online store for unique baby and kids clothes, toys and accessories. We handpick emerging designers from America, Europe and beyond, many who are moms just like us, to stock some impossibly cute pieces.
We also handpick brands that are giving back. Our collections are “globally sourced with a conscience,” meaning that we look for designers who are making their marks on the world through social initiatives that impact communities in need. Because, as mothers, we feel compelled to be a part of something bigger.
For example, one of our designers provides jobs to single mothers in Colombia, who stitch her gorgeous clothing by hand. Another uses part of her proceeds to provide schooling to children in northern India. And yet another donates turbans to babies or children that have lost their hair due to medically induced hair loss.
How did the idea of “Nos Nos Kids” come up??? Do you have a Brand story to share?
Nos Nos means “half half” in Arabic. It’s a term near and dear to our hearts. We are two American mothers living in Dubai. Our husbands come from the land of tabboulleh and man’oushe. When we started having kids, we would joke that they were “nos nos:” half American, half Lebanese, and something 100% all their own!
So with our own kids’ unique spirits in mind, we opened Nos Nos, a collaboration born of our shared desire to bring unique and creative children’s clothing, toys and accessories to the Middle East.
With so many Fashion stores for kids around, how do you make yourself stand out in the crowd?
Although there are a lot of big name children’s clothing stores in the area, we both discovered that it was hard to find unique clothes that reflected our kids’ own personalities. There aren’t many small, boutique brands here. Nos Nos is different because we focus on those small designers who put so much heart and soul into their clothes. Many of our designers are moms just like us – so they can capture the unique spirit of their kids in their designs. We believe that ‘heart and soul’ is missing from a lot of the mainstream brands.
We also distinguish ourselves by putting a lot of thought and care into what kind of materials we carry. Did you know that cotton is the world’s dirtiest crop? It uses over 20% of the world’s insecticides, many of which just don’t wash out. That’s a scary thought when you’re clothing your baby in cotton every day. So we are always on the lookout for natural, organic cottons – and fairtrade clothes as well. We think mamas are starting to think harder about what their kids are eating – and wearing! – and that is definitely a trend that we embrace.
What makes your Business Challenging and how do you overcome them?
We just launched the site in May, so we are still very new. We joke that if our company was a baby, she would only just be learning to keep her head up! So we try to go easy on ourselves and have a lot of patience. We really love what we are doing with Nos Nos and have so much pride in our product, so right now we are just focusing on getting the Nos Nos brand out there.
How do you pick such awesome and unique designs and brands for the store? Where do you source them from?
Twakniqua is a grad of Parsons New School of Design in NYC and is a former buyer for Saks – so she has a great eye for fashion. She is always on the lookout for brands with extra personality and creative style that aren’t readily available in the Middle East.
What is your best strategy for promoting the Business?
Our focus right now has been on social media. It’s a powerful channel because people trust the opinions of other people in their lives and of the people they respect. We believe the more people are talking about Nos Nos, the faster our business can grow.
Would you mind sharing a little about both your families?
Twakniqua is mama to Morgan (4) and Sandra is mama to Leila (3) and Julian (1). We are both American and our Lebanese husbands grew up in Beirut together.
How do you both manage and balance your time as a mom and a Business woman?
Taking the entrepreneurial road is definitely a hard and risky one – but it comes with huge benefits. We can both work from home and be close to our kids throughout the day. And since we are both in the same boat, we are very flexible and forgiving with one another. If one of us has been up late with a sick kid, it’s ok to postpone a meeting. That degree of flexibility helps us maintain some balance in our lives. We both try to squeeze work, family and “me-time” in every day.
What are your Future plans and vision for your business? Where do you see yourself and “Nos-Nos” in 5 years’ time?
We have lots of ideas about expanding our business, both in terms of our product base and our reach. For the moment, we would love to find new designers and labels from around this region in particular.
Lastly what would be your advice to aspiring women who plan to start a new business?
Over the past year, we have actually discovered that there are fewer hurdles for a woman in the entrepreneurial world than in the corporate world. It is a very inspiring and welcoming environment to start a business in Dubai and we would encourage anyone to do it. There will be lots of unknowns and that’s ok – just keep learning and putting one step in front of the other.
